What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling & root planing (sometimes called a "deep cleaning") is a two-step periodontal procedure. Scaling removes hardened deposits above and below the gumline. Root planing then smooths the tooth roots, making it easier for the gums to heal and reattach.
