CEREC One-Visit Crowns

There are several reasons why you might need a dental crown – a restoration that partly or completely covers the outside of a tooth. Large cavities, fillings, fractures, or trauma can all rob a tooth of its structural support and make it more prone to being lost in the future. A crown replaces the weakened or defective tooth structure with a stronger material and is also indicated when you want to change the overall shape of a tooth.

At Pinnacle Dental, we offer both traditional porcelain and zirconia crowns as well as same-day crowns using the CEREC system.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC is a CAD-CAM system used to create ceramic restorations that can be completed in a single appointment. The CEREC system uses a digital camera to scan the tooth needing a crown to make an accurate map of your tooth and its space, without the need for traditional impression materials. CEREC technology allows Dr. Kottman to design, fabricate, and place the restoration in one visit. The procedure can take less than 2 hours, and you'll leave the same day with your permanent restoration.

Advantages of CEREC

  • The restoration is started and completed in one appointment, which eliminates the hassle of a temporary crown and having to come back for a second appointment.
  • There is no need for traditional impression material, which can be uncomfortable – especially if you have a strong gag reflex!
  • Because it creates an accurate map of the tooth and the space it occupies, the CEREC software allows the doctor to design a crown that fits precisely, feels like your natural tooth, and is metal-free.
  • In many cases, more of your natural tooth structure can be preserved and less aggressive treatment rendered with the CEREC system.

Creating a Crown with CEREC

Once your tooth has been prepared to receive a restoration, the area will be photographed with a digital camera. The CAD/CAD software converts the pictures into a three-dimensional digital model, which Dr. Kottman will use to design your crown. Once the design is complete, the restoration is milled from a ceramic block in an in-house milling unit controlled by the computer. The crown is then bonded to the tooth with resin bonding material. From start to finish, the process usually takes two hours.

Care After Placement

You may feel some sensitivity to hot and cold substances after your CEREC crown is placed, as your mouth needs time to heal. If you have sore gums or pain in the tooth, you can take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) according to package instructions. However if your sensitivity persists, or your bite feels like it needs some adjustment, please call our office.

Continue brushing and flossing daily, as maintaining oral hygiene is critical for the overall health of all your teeth. Remember that any food that can damage your natural teeth can also damage a crown, so take care with extremely hard foods and sticky candies. If you have any questions, please call us at Pinnacle Dental.
