At Pinnacle Dental, we understand that improving your smile is a great way to boost how you look and feel. Although a healthy smile can give us greater self-confidence, for many of us, fillings and crowns can be more urgent than straightening our teeth. But did you know the following?
- Teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced are a risk factor for periodontal disease, a condition that can lead to tooth loss.
- Crowded teeth are harder to keep clean, and poor oral health has been linked to other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, and diabetes.
- Properly aligned teeth can relieve issues that result from an improper bite, including chewing or speech difficulties, jaw problems, and extra wear on tooth enamel.
- Straight teeth boost confidence and can improve your overall quality of life.
Conventional braces are a tried-and-true method to straighten your teeth, but all the metal can irritate the inside of your mouth and change the way certain foods taste. Plus, the effort of dealing with the wires and brackets when it comes to brushing and flossing, broken parts, playing sports or certain instruments, or even eating your favorite foods, can be tiring.
Invisalign is a cutting-edge treatment designed to give you greater comfort and convenience. Invisalign clear braces are approved for use by adults and teenagers alike, though not everyone is a candidate. You change the clear aligners used to straighten your teeth every two weeks and only need to see Dr. Freeman every six weeks for her to check your progress. For this reason, and because there are no delays due to broken wires and brackets, treatment time is usually shorter than with traditional braces. The aligners are also virtually invisible, removable for easy cleaning, and allow you to eat whatever you want.
Coming In for Treatment
Give us a call at Pinnacle Dental to schedule a consultation with Dr. Katelyn Freeman, who is a certified Invisalign provider. You will be given a full oral exam, which will include x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth. Dr. Freeman will send these off to the Invisalign company, who will use these to create a digital 3-D image that will show you just how your teeth will move with each stage of treatment. The images will also be the blueprint for the creation of a series of custom-made aligners. At this point, the length and cost of the Invisalign treatment will be discussed, as well as the anticipated results for you.
Care During Treatment
Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that can be worn throughout the day. For best results, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day throughout treatment. You can remove them when you eat or to brush and floss your teeth.
As part of the Invisalign treatment, Dr. Freeman may need to “slenderize” your teeth a little by gently sanding between them. This helps your teeth fit nicely together as the aligners do their work. Small amounts of tooth-colored attachments (white filling material) are sometimes used on select teeth to aid in directing the alignments correctly. They blend in with your natural teeth and are sanded off once treatment is over.
As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth will gradually shift into place. About every two weeks you’ll change to a new set of aligners, and then every six weeks, you’ll have checkups at Pinnacle Dental, where Dr. Freeman or your hygienist will show you how you’ve advanced with each stage of treatment.
You can clean your Invisalign aligners when you brush your teeth by brushing and then rinsing them in lukewarm water. If you wish, Pinnacle Dental can also provide you with an Invisalign cleaning kit. Most people will require a retainer following orthodontic treatment, and Dr. Freeman will discuss this with you after you complete treatment.
Insurance and Financial Coverage
Invisalign treatment is covered by some insurance providers, flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and payment plans. Pinnacle Dental will bill to all PPO insurance plans and are happy to help you determine whether your insurance covers Invisalign treatment.
